Under King Henry VII rule, the first double gold sovereign coin was struck in 1485. Due to its large size and weight, it was not practical to use it for. It was only used for presentation purposes. Many feel that it was intended to be a treble sovereign. This double sovereign was also struck during the rule of Edward VI in 1553, however was not used for circulation.
The modern gold double sovereigns were minted only in 1820 and they were also known as two pound gold coins. The design is similar to that of modern sovereigns. The obverse of the coin features the reigning monarch’s bust portrait for a particular period and the reverse usually features the iconic design by the Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci of St. George mounted on horseback slaying a dragon. The 1820 coins were only proof pattern coins.
