Detailed Information:

Queen Victoria ascended the throne at a very young age of 18 years after the death of her uncle William IV on June 20, 1837. Her period of rule is famously known as the Victorian Era which lasted for a good 63 years. During her reign, Britain saw a lot of coins being minted. Sovereign was one of the most widely circulated coins not just inside Britain but also throughout the world as the British Empire had extended to several other countries during Victoria’s reign. It was an internationally recognized legal tender of Britain.

The sovereign went through three prominent design changes during Victoria’s reign which are famously divided into three groups; Young Head (1837-1887), Jubilee Head (1887-1893), and Old Head (1893-1901).

The Young Head'ss obverse features a leftward facing bust portrait of young and beautiful Queen Victoria with her hair loosely tied to a bun or a small ponytail. Her head bound by double fillets or hairband. This was a design by William Wyon.

The Young Head coins are again divided into two groups when it comes to the reverse design. The coins from 1838 to 1887 featured a heraldic shield topped by a crown with a small rosette on either side which was designed by Jean Baptiste Merlen.

The reverse of coins from 1871 to 1887 features the iconic design by Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci of St. George mounted on horseback slaying a dragon.

Both the above designs were simultaneously produced and used in circulation from 1871-1887.

With an elaborate reigning period, Queen Victoria took Britain to the pinnacle of its glory and the gold sovereigns are the living proof of the splendor of her reign. These coins due to their age, historical significance, artistic and intrinsic value are highly regarded in the numismatic world. Due to its great price performance track record, they are a favorite investment option for investors too.

The Young Head saw a lot of minor changes in its design on the obverse too, depending on these minor changes and their rarity, some coins have a higher value than the other.
