In 2019, the Austrian Mint released three silver coin series to celebrate their 825th anniversary. The three releases signify three iconic historical moments and the founding of the Vienna Mint. Back in 1991, King Richard ‘The Lionheart’ of England and Duke Leopold V of Austria, got into a debate throughout the fall of the city of Acre. In winter 1192, on the outskirts of Vienna, Richard was defeated by Leopold on his route back home from the Holy Land. Leopold succeeded to extort from the English people in return for Richard’s freedom through large bribe in silver. The ransom led to the birth of the fable of Robin Hood. Leopold utilized the silver to establish both the haven of Wiener Neustadt and the original Mint in Vienna.

Leopold used the ransom paid for Richard the Lionheart whereas he had previously held as a hostage at Durnstein Castle.
