The US Mint’s American Eagle series is graced with two distinctly American icons: the majestic bald eagle and the formidable Lady Liberty. Starting this year, the Miley Busiek “Family of Eagles” design struck on the reverse will be retired. Instead, the new reverse includes a hyper-realistic rendering of a bald eagle as designed by Jennie Norris, an Artistic Infusion Program Artist, and additional security features. Similarly, the Silver Eagle coins will also have a new reverse image, and both updates were issued later in 2021. There are no design changes to the Platinum and Palladium Eagle coins at this time.

On the obverse, Lady Liberty comes to life as a beacon of hope walking toward the viewer. She bears a lit torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, lighting the way to hope and prosperity. Her hair and gown appear to move in the wind, as the sunrise lights up the US Capitol behind her.

The reverse of the Gold Eagle features Jennie Norris' close-up image of the left side of a bald eagle’s head. Inscriptions surround the eagle including the country, weight, purity, denomination, “E Pluribus Unum”, and “In God We Trust”.
