The Proof American Gold Eagle

American Gold Eagle coins are very popular among investors and collectors. Being first minted in 1986, by the US Mint, these coins are available in three types: Brilliant UncirculatedCertified, and Proof Gold Eagles. Proof Gold Coins were initially produced as a set that was used to check the dies of the minted coins and to archive them. But, over time, these coins started to be manufactured in few items, particularly for passionate collectors, using a special technique during the minting process, which gives them an exclusive glossy finish and a highly detailed appearance. The dies that are used for striking proof coins are treated with special chemicals and are used twice or more times in the mintage process. This is why proof coins have a sharper look, with frosted details, mirror-like, and smooth flat parts. Proof coins are handled with great care individually. The outstanding Proof American Gold Eagle coin is produced in four sizes of 1, ½, ¼, and 1/10 ounce and is made of 91,67% of gold, with silver and copper insertions for increased durability. Proof Gold Eagle coins may also carry a certain grading established by NCG or PCGS, usually with the prefix PR of PF and the quality number up to 70. The proof coin graded with 70 is extremely rare to find, as it means that this coin has no post-production imperfections noticeable at a 5x magnification. Certified Proof Gold Eagles are more worthy due to their grading and rarity. Proof Gold Eagle coins are IRA-eligible and can be used as a retirement option.

The Design of Proof American Gold Eagle

Proof Gold Eagle coins are struck having the same design of the Gold Double Eagle coin first minted in 1907. Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse of the coin as walking with confidence with her hair flowing against the rays of the sun. She is holding an olive branch and a torch in her hands. Her image is encircled by the state stars and the word ‘Liberty’, and in the USA Capitol building on the down-left. This impressive design was created by the famous American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens’. On the reverse side of the coin is depicted as a male eagle flying over its nest and carrying an olive branch in its talons. The female eagle is protecting its hatchlings in the nest. This representation of the bald eagle, the American symbol of patriotism and strength, showcases the importance of family values. The reverse design belongs to the contemporary sculptor Miley Busiek. The image of the eagles is surrounded by the face value of the coin and weight marks, along with the ‘United States of America’, “E Pluribus Unum’, and ‘In God We Trust’ inscriptions.
