This Gold Eagle marks the first proof issue to carry the new reverse design. A limited mintage of only 13,625 Proof 1/4 oz Gold Eagle coins will be minted in total, and the US Mint is only releasing 3,375 of those inside the individual mint-issued box with a COA. Since the introduction of the American Eagle in 1986, this coin has continuously featured American icons including the Bald Eagle, Lady Liberty, and the US Capitol. As this year (2021) marks the 35th Anniversary of the coin program, the US Mint decided to update the reverse designs for both the Gold and Silver Eagles. These updates not only include a design modification, but added security features for the 1 troy oz size as well! At this time, the update will not affect either the Platinum or Palladium Eagle coins.

The obverse, unchanged, continues to display the recognizable Saint-Gaudens illustration. Lady Liberty strides forward while bearing a flaming torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The background shows beams of sunlight radiating from the US Capitol.

The reverse of this proof American Gold Eagle coin showcases Jennie Norris' close-up image of the left side of a bald eagle’s head. Inscriptions surrounding the eagle include the country, weight, purity, denomination, “E Pluribus Unum”, and “In God We Trust”.
