Since its introduction in 1986, the American Eagle coin has continuously featured patriotic icons including the Bald Eagle, Lady Liberty, and the US Capitol. Since this year (2021) commemorates the 35th Anniversary of this celebrated coin program, the US Mint decided to update the reverse designs for both the Gold and Silver Eagles. These updates not only include a major design switch but added security features as well! At this time, the update will not affect either the Platinum or Palladium Eagle coins.

The obverse, unchanged, continues to feature the recognizable Saint-Gaudens illustration. Lady Liberty marches forward while holding a flaming torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. In the background, beams of sunlight radiate from the US Capitol.

The reverse of this proof American Gold Eagle coin showcases artist Jennie Norris' close-up image of a bald eagle’s head. Inscriptions surrounding the eagle include the country, weight, purity, denomination, “E Pluribus Unum”, and “In God We Trust”.
