In 1986 the American Eagle Series released for the first time, entirely struck by the San Francisco Mint. Once former president FDR’s mandate outlawing private precious metals ownership was overturned, this made room for legislation to create this prestigious program. The obverse features the Adolph A Weinman image known as “Walking Liberty”. This image displays Lady Liberty walking towards the rising sun. Her right arm is outstretched to the horizon, as her left arm cradles oak and laurel branches. The US flag over her shoulders waves in the soft breeze. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY" and the year of mintage. This image will remain the same for the new edition.

The original reverse displayed on this coin is John Mercanti’s rendition of the US heraldic bald eagle. This eagle is stationed underneath 13 stars, which symbolizes the original colonies. The eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons. On its chest is a shield emblazoned with the US Flag. Inscriptions include the weight and denomination of the coin. Keep in mind, this image will not appear on future releases of the Silver Eagle coins.
