The Royal Canadian Mint has a reputation for innovation and being a pioneer in minting and refining technology. Despite having achieved many milestones in the industry, the Canadian Mint continues to engineer new technologies including this new Multilayered Engraving method. This method creates two separate layers of art on the coin: a cutout and an etched background on the coin’s interior surface. This approach was previewed in early 2020 and it utilizes specially manufactured dies to engrave behind the top plate of the reverse. In the case of this multilayered cougar silver coin, this could be a world-first that sets in motion a slew of other 3-dimensional, high relief bullion coins.

The obverse of this Canadian silver coin is decorated with the Susanna Blunt rendition of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The background features a wooden-style pattern to continue the theme of the forest found on the reverse. Inscriptions on this side include the Queen's name, "Queen by the Grace of God," in Latin, and the face value of the coin.

The reverse displays the 3D image of a cougar sitting calmly as it watches the viewer of the coin. Behind the cougar is a fully rendered setting of a forest, made possible only by this new minting process.
