This giant silver coin commemorates the 500-year anniversary of the fall of the Aztec empire. This thrilling high relief design displays a tribute to the former emperor known as Moctezuma II, or Montezuma II. This ruler was brought down by Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conquistador. Once understanding that Cortez was dangerous, Montezuma II tried to buy him off to protect Tenochtitlan. However, Cortez already had alliances outside the city and imprisoned Montezuma II when he sensed there was a trap. The cause of Montezuma II’s death is unclear. The Aztecs believed the Spanish assassinated him. Spanish records indicated the Aztec citizens did not respect their ruler after he submitted to the Spanish, and was killed as a result of their violent protest. Nevertheless, losing Montezuma II was the first step in the fall of the Aztec empire, which Cortez conquered in 1521.
The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s artistic rendering of Queen Elizabeth II. She is facing to the right, surrounded by inscriptions noting the silver coin’s weight, purity, and face value.
The reverse of the coin showcases the intricately designed multilayered engravings that form the Aztec calendar centerpiece. Traditional Aztec symbols and patterns surround the calendar, along with a profile design of the last Aztec king and the word “Aztec.” Inscriptions include the year of mintage and “500 YEARS”.
