The obverse of the 1 oz Silver Eagles features the Walking Liberty, which an iconic design that first appeared on Silver Half Dollars in 1916. The design was created by the renowned student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Adolph A. Weinman. Weinman’s works were featured on the Walking Liberty Half Dollars. On these coins, Liberty walks forward with her right arm held out and branches in her left arm. The U.S. flag unfurls behind her with the sun rising in the background. The reverse displays the Heraldic eagle designed by American engraver John Mercanti.
The reverse of the 1 oz Silver Eagle features the design by John Mercanti inspired by the Great Seal of the United States. A large shield sits on the chest of a majestic eagle with wings outstretched. The words “E Pluribus Unum” are written on a ribbon clasped in the eagle’s beak. The eagle also grips both arrows and an olive branch in its talons.
