The American Eagle Series premiered in 1986 after the United States resumed bullion production. This was the first bullion coin series since FDR outlawed private ownership of precious metal bullion in 1933. These Silver American Eagles have been among the most top purchases for portfolios each year. ASE dollar coins also make a wonderful first purchase for beginning collectors since they are struck by the US Mint and backed by the US government.
The obverse of this coin bears the 1916 Adolph A. Weinman “Walking Liberty” design first printed on the American silver half dollars from the early 1900s. In the picture, Lady Liberty strides to the coin’s left, towards the rising sun. Her right arm is extended in this direction as well, and the American flag waves behind her. In her other arm, she carries a bounty of olive and oak branches.
On the coin’s reverse is the updated US National Coat of Arms design by John Mercanti. This Coat of Arms has a bald eagle with its wings spread apart. Clutched in its talons are a bundle of arrows in one, and an olive branch in the other to symbolize the American “strength through peace” ideology. Hanging from its beak is a banner that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. Its chest bears a shield with the US flag. Finally, thirteen stars shine above the eagle’s head to signify the original colonies.
