The 1 oz Silver American Eagle was first minted in 1986. The Liberty Coin Act was passed in July of 1985, and it authorized the silver and gold American Eagle coins. The American Eagle collection is the first official, modern US bullion coin series since former President FDR outlawed private ownership of precious metals during the Great Depression. This coin is issued as legal tender with a face value of $1, but it is valued much higher for its high silver content. Silver American Eagles are wonderful coins to collect whether you have been collecting for a long time or you are just beginning, so order yours today!
The obverse of this 1oz Silver Eagle bears Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design that graced American silver half dollars starting in 1916. Lady Liberty strides to the coin’s left where the sun rises. She extends her arm towards the sunrise as the American flag ripples around her shoulders. Lady Liberty also carries a collection of oak and olive branches in her left arm, a symbol of peace. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed along the rim of the coin, along with the year of issue and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST”.
The coin’s reverse displays John Mercanti’s updated US National Coat of Arms. A bald eagle spreads its wings wide in the center of the image. The eagle clutches a bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Additionally, its beak grips a banner that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, and its chest bears a shield with the US flag. 13 stars shine above the eagle’s head to symbolize the original 13 colonies. The weight, purity, denomination, and country’s name are inscribed around the rim.
