Additionally, these coins arrive graded by NGC as a near-perfect PF 69 with the Early Release designation. The curved coins weigh 11.340g and are struck from .833 nickel. Celebrate the anniversary with this charitable coin for the classic American sport.
Basketball was first played in Springfield, MA in 1891 with James Naismith as the inventor. To revel in the history of the hometown of the sport, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame opened in 1959. The Hall of Fame is an independent, nonprofit organization with the mission to spread access to basketball for players of all kinds from children to adults, regardless of gender or country. One of their best-known events is the annual Enshrinement Ceremony that honors the pro players and supporters like coaches and referees. On top of housing about 400 inductees in its museum, the Hall of Fame also hosts high school and collegiate competitions everywhere.
The obverse design for each one of the basketball coins in this series features the winning illustration from the public competition. US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP)’s Justin Kunz sought to capture the diversity of basketball players. This design has three different players, and all three raise their arms to grab the basketball soaring over their heads. On top of that, the background and border together create a basketball hoop rim and net. This could be a symbol to show that the players could be about to score.
The reverse was designed by AIP artist Donna Weaver. This side highlights the basketball itself as it is about to fall through the hoop. Inscriptions on the coin note the face value, country, artist initials, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
