Authorized by America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008, the United States Mint started production on an exciting new coin program in 2010. This became known as the “America the Beautiful” Quarters Series which would produce over 50 silver quarter designs depicting US National parks and other noteworthy US sites and events. Every year since its inception, the ATB program creates five new and unique quarter designs. The states and territories represented by the new 2019 America the Beautiful coins include Guam, Idaho, Massachusetts, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Texas.

This coin commemorates the historical significance of the San Antonio Missions established in the late 1600s and early 1700s. During the 1690s, when French colonization started into Texas from Lousiana, Spain increased its foothold in East Texas with the establishment of religious outposts called “Missions”. These Spanish Missions helped lay the foundation for what later became the city of San Antonio, TX. Nowadays, the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park serves the San Antonio area as a resource for historical education, cultural events, and nature preservation.
