Introduction:

After the authorization of America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008, the extremely popular bullion silver coins were first released in 2010 by the U.S. Mint. These coins are released in honor of the splendor and beauty of the American National Parks. This is a 12-year program by the Mint which in total will release 56 strikes with five different designs each year. The program will end in 2021 by releasing just a single coin that year.

The Maah Daah Hey Trail is important in connecting the Western North Dakota’s three geographically separated areas of Badlands, which form the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The Little Missouri River flows through all these three areas, sustaining the picturesque beauty and the Great Plains wildlife. The park was named after U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, keeping in mind his enduring contribution to the conservation of America’s natural resources.

When Theodore Roosevelt first arrived in North Dakota in September 1883, he fell in love with its ethereal beauty, the rugged lifestyle, and the free spirit of the West. He spent quite some time there in his ranches and he even penned three books about his experience of the Wild West and his ranch life. The arduous and the adventurous life outdoors and the loss of his cattle in the harsh starvation winter of 1886-1887 became the driving force for Theodore Roosevelt to establish the National Park System through legislation. Today the Theodore Roosevelt National Park is home to a wide variety of Great Plains wildlife and hundreds of species of flowering plants. One gets to enjoy a different scenic beauty with each changing season. It is also a great recreational spot that offers an array of activities.

The Obverse side of each of the Theodore Roosevelt Nation Park Silver Coin is graced by the profile portrait of George Washington, which is a design by John Flanagan and was originally used on the 1932 Washington Quarters. To bring out the subtle details, the original design was restored resulting in a remarkably detailed design with a brilliant finish. Inscriptions are “United States of America,” “In God We Trust,” “Liberty,” “Quarter Dollar.”

The reverse exhibits a design by Joel Iskowitz of a young Theodore Roosevelt surveying the terrain near the Little Missouri River on horseback. This was sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. This design was selected from among six other candidates. Inscriptions are “North Dakota,” “Theodore Roosevelt,” “E Pluribus Unum,” with the year of Mintage (2016).

America The Beautiful silver coins are minted in both bullion version as well as uncirculated versions by the U.S. Mint. The Denver Mint and the Philadelphia Mint contribute to the major production of these coins. The involvement of the San Francisco Mint will be striking proof quality versions for the coin collectors.
