Between the border of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia, lies the beautiful, massive, and natural Cumberland Gap in the Appalachian Mountains. This gap has been a short cut through the mountains for all the migratory animals that move from the wintering southern grounds to the summery northern range, which became an ideal ground for the Native Americans to hunt animals. The gap served as the key route for the settlers who wanted to move west from the eastern colonies into Kentucky. Between 1775 and 1810, an estimated 300,000 settlers are believed to have used this gap to migrate west. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park, established on June 11, 1940.
Leftward facing portrait of George Washington graces the Obverse side of each 2016 issued 5 oz ATB Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Silver Coin. The John Flanagan design can originally be seen on the 1932 Washington Quarters. The design was restored to bring out the subtle details of the original design and looks beautiful. Inscriptions are “United States of America,” “In God We Trust,” “Liberty,” “Quarter Dollar.”
On the reverse, the design features a frontiersman gazing across the mountains to the West. The Cumberland Gap was used to migrate to the western frontiers of Kentucky and Tennessee by many pioneers. Inscriptions are “Kentucky,” “Cumberland Gap,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and “First Door Way To The West” with year of Mintage 2016. This is a design by AIP artist Barbara Fox.
America The Beautiful silver coins are minted in both bullion version as well as uncirculated versions by the U.S. Mint. The Denver Mint and the Philadelphia Mint also contribute to the production of these coins. The involvement of the San Francisco Mint is limited to releasing only a few special-edition coins.
