Detailed Information:
The original Standing Liberty was first issued in 1916 and was minted at three prominent mints; the Philadelphia Mint, the Denver Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. The Standing Liberty replaced a long and not so artistic series of Barber Quarters. The 1890 Statute was misinterpreted by the Mint Director at the time, Robert W. Woolley, in which he believed it was compulsory to replace an old coin series after it had been in circulation for 25 years or more. This lead to a plan of introducing new designs to the three denominations; the dime, the quarters, and the half dollars.
A competition held by the Commission of Fine Arts resulted in Hermon Atkins MacNeil winning the opportunity to design the quarter dollar, thus the Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar was created. These coins were made of 90% silver and 10% copper. The design upon its release in 1916 received a lot of criticism from the religious leaders and prominent citizens stating that the bare-breasted liberty was not in good taste.
There are three types in Standing Liberty based on the changes in the design.
Type 1 - In 1916, the obverse featured a bare-breasted Liberty. The reverse featured seven stars on the left side and six stars on the right side of the eagle. Had raised dates.
Type 2 - The obverse and reverse were changed midway through 1917. On the obverse, a chain mail vest covered the bare breast of Lady Liberty. On the reverse, which had seven stars on the left side and six stars on the right side of the eagle were changed to five stars on each side of the eagle and three stars underneath the eagle. With raised dates.
Type 3 - In 1925, to protect the dates from wearing off, they were recessed below the rim.
The Gold Standing Liberty coin will simulate the type 1 design. This is a commemorative coin that has been highly anticipated by collectors as well as investors.
