U.S. Mint 1 oz Gold Commemorative Arts Medal (Random Year)

Please note that medals may have scuffs, scratches, or spots from circulation.

The US Mint Gold Commemorative Art Medals was a 5-year series which minted 10 bullion medallions; 5 in 1 oz size and 5 in ½ oz size. The program ran from 1980-1984. These medallions were introduced as a competition to the South African Krugerrands which were and are extremely popular even today. Although these medallions were not as popular when they were released, they are rare to find today as many of them melted by those who owned them in bulk.

These medallions were authorized by the Gold Medallion Act of 1978 and distributed primarily through the U.S. Postal Service, leading to the nickname “Postal Gold.”

Today, their scarcity, combined with the unique designs honoring America’s cultural icons, makes the American Arts Gold Medallions a fascinating and collectible series.

Medallion Features:

  • Contains 1 troy ounce of .900 fine gold
  • Minted by the US Mint at West Point
  • Secondary Market
  • Minted from 1980-1984. Dates will be chosen randomly based on availability.

Obverse & Reverse Designs: Changed annually, each honoring a famous American artist:

  • 1980: Grant Wood – painter of American Gothic
  • 1981: Mark Twain – author of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn
  • 1982: Louis Armstrong – jazz musician and composer
  • 1983: Robert Frost – Pulitzer Prize-winning poet
  • 1984: Helen Hayes – actress and EGOT winner

Why buy Commemorative Arts Gold Medallion?

  • These gold medals were a 5-year series and are not struck anymore.
  • Rare to find in today’s date as most were melted by the owners.
  • Made from 90% gold and 10% copper, hence they are strong and durable.

The U.S. Mint 1 oz Gold Commemorative Arts Medallion (Random Year) represents a rare chapter in U.S. bullion history. Once overlooked, these pieces are now prized by collectors for their artistry, scarcity, and tribute to great American artists.
