For twelve years, Napolean Bonaparte's image was stamped onto French 40 Francs gold coin. After Napoleon's defeat, subsequent governments pulled his gold coins out of circulation and melted them. As a result, they are difficult to find nowadays.

Napoleon Bonaparte often regarded as one of the world’s greatest military minds. After coming to power in 1800, he enacted many reforms and was eventually crowned emperor of France. Though he suffered some losses after 1810 and was eventually exiled, his impact on France and the world cannot be overstated. This coin is one way in which Napoleon’s name lives on.

The obverse portrays Napoleon Bonaparte during his reign as emperor. The reverse portrays the denomination (40 Francs) within a wreath.
