A Profound Loss of a Numismatic Luminary: Remembering Miles Standish

The numismatic community and Bullion Exchanges mourn the sudden passing of a remarkable figure, Michael "Miles" Standish. As a pioneering numismatist with close ties to our organization, Mr. Standish's sudden loss profoundly impacts us. He had spent time at ANACS, Professional Coin Grading Service, and Numismatic Guaranty Company, making valuable contributions to the field that will be remembered for generations to come.
Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Mr. Standish launched his numismatic journey in 1982, when he was just 17. He quickly made his mark, setting up his first table for buying and selling coins at the National Silver Dollar Show in Houston. Over his career, Mr. Standish penned numerous award-winning articles and books, including "Morgan Dollar: America’s Love Affair with a Legendary Coin," and "American Silver Eagles: A Guide to the U.S. Bullion Coin Program," which he co-authored with retired U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John M. Mercanti.
Known for his innovative mind, Mr. Standish conceived the first encapsulated holder housing a U.S. coin and a presidential autograph. He made a significant mark in boosting the sales of the 50 State quarter dollars by creating an encapsulated coin holder with a State quarter dollar and the corresponding state flag.
In 2015, Mr. Standish served as NGC's vice president, where he spearheaded various modern coin certification programs. His dedication to the numismatic community didn't go unnoticed. In 2011, then-Mint Director Moy awarded him the coveted “Director’s Coin for Excellence” medal.
After stepping down from his NGC role in 2022, Mr. Standish formed Miles Standish LLC. Here, he focused on developing further projects, such as producing more books. His commitments also extended to philanthropy, as he supported numerous endeavors, including the American Numismatic Association and the Standish Foundation for Children.
Mr. Standish held a special place in the heart of Bullion Exchanges. His unwavering dedication and significant contributions to numismatics greatly influenced our work and our interactions with the wider numismatic community. His partnership, knowledge, and friendship here were deeply valued, making his loss deeply felt.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Andrea Mangione Standish. As we mourn Mr. Standish's passing, we also celebrate his remarkable life and contributions to the numismatic community. His legacy will continue to inspire our work at Bullion Exchanges. His loss signifies the end of a unique chapter in numismatics, but his influence remains embedded in the fabric of our industry.
