William Wyon, the official chief engraver at the Royal Mint from 1828 until 1851, conceived the original Una and the Lion design. It was originally designated for the gold Five-Sovereign piece to commemorate the start of Queen Victoria’s reign. In William Wyon’s original design, he cast the young queen in the role of Una. This was regarded as a bold move since it marked the first time a British monarch was depicted as a fictional character on a coin.

The image of Una standing next to a ferocious lion was inspired by the epic poem “The Faerie Queene”, written by Edmund Spenser. In the story, the beautiful Una goes on a journey to free her parents (the King and Queen) from an evil dragon. During her travels she meets a lion, who was charmed by Una’s truth, beauty, and innocence. Instead of devouring her, the lion becomes her protector and companion. Spenser likely intended for Una to represent Queen Elizabeth I, who was the head of the Church of England at the time.
