The original Una and the Lion design was created by William Wyon, the official chief engraver at the Royal Mint from 1828 until his death in 1851. It was initially produced for the gold Five-Sovereign piece to commemorate the beginning of Queen Victoria’s Reign. In the original design, William Wyon cast the young queen in the role of Una. This was considered a bold move as it marked the first time a British monarch was depicted as a fictional character on a coin.
The image of Una next to a fierce lion was inspired by the epic poem “The Faerie Queene”, written by Edmund Spenser. In this story, Una, the daughter of an imprisoned King and Queen, goes on a journey to free her parents from a ferocious dragon. Along the way she meets a lion, who was charmed by Una’s beauty, truth, and innocence. Instead of devouring her, the lion becomes her companion and protector. Una is believed to represent Queen Elizabeth I, who was the head of the Church of England when Spenser wrote his poem.
The obverse/front of the bar displays the Royal Mint logo along with the weight and purity of the bar. A faded spiral design is used for the background.
The reverse/back of the bar showcases the reinterpreted design of Una and the Lion, created by Jody Clark. In this illustration, the gentle Una stands tall while facing to the left. She holds the monarch’s orb and scepter as the wind gently blows through her hair. Una’s faithful lion companion stands beside her, and together they gaze into the future.
