The official chief engraver at the Royal Mint from 1828 to 1851 created the original design for Una and the Lion. His name was William Wyon, and he remains well known and respected among coin collectors due to his impressive output and artistic skill. Wyon’s design was originally manufactured for the gold Five-Sovereign piece commemorating the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign. In Wyon’s striking design, he made a bold move in casting the young queen as the legendary Una, for a British monarch had never before been depicted as a fictional character on a coin.

“The Faerie Queene”, written by English poet Edmund Spenser, provided the inspiration for the illustration of Una standing next to an imposing lion. In the epic poem, the beautiful Una goes on a long journey to free her parents (the King and Queen) from imprisonment by an evil dragon. During her travels she came across a lion, who was won over by Una’s truth, beauty, and innocence. Instead of consuming her for his next meal, the lion became her protector and champion. Spenser intended for Una to represent Queen Elizabeth I, who was the head of the Church of England at the time.

The obverse/front of the bar features the Royal Mint logo along with the weight and purity of the bar. A faded spiral design appears in the background.

The reverse/back of the bar shows off the reinterpreted design of Una and the Lion, created by Jody Clark. In this image, Una stands tall while facing left. She holds the monarch’s orb and scepter in her hands as the wind blows gently through the strands of her hair. Una’s brave lion companion stands beside her, and together they gaze into the future.
