JFK was the youngest president of the US so far, and the first Catholic elected to office. He was only in office until November 22, 1963 when he was assassinated. Within hours of his death, the US Mint director began to push forth plans to on the Kennedy Half Dollars. The Chief Engraver at the time was Gilroy Roberts, and he was authorized to design the coin on November 27th, after Jacqueline Kennedy requested putting her late husband on the half-dollar instead of the quarter. Roberts and the designer of the reverse, Frank Gasparro, created a modified design that was already featured on the Kennedy Medal to be used for the Kennedy Half Dollar. As a memento of his life, and the growing value of silver, many hoarded these coins instead of using them for circulation.  

The obverse design displays the left-facing portrait of John F. Kennedy, one of the US's most remarkable presidents. The reverse features a modified Presidential Seal of an American Eagle holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in each of us its talons. Inscribed on this side is "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the denomination.
