On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. On January 30, 1964, the first set of Kennedy Half Dollars were produced at the Denver Mint to honor the deceased president. The coin was extremely popular with the public due to the popularity of the president, both inside and outside of America. Only the 1964 series has a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper. From 1965-1969, the composition was reduced to 40% silver. From 1970 to present date, the Kennedy Half Dollars are made up of copper and nickel with zero amount of silver in them.
Coin Features:
- Each coin in the roll contains 0.3617 (approx) troy ounce of 900 pure silver. Total weight of 200 coins approximately 71.5 troy ounces (approx).

- Reverse: An adaptation of the Presidential Seal showing an eagle with its wings widespread upholding a striped shield as well as an olive branch and bundle of arrows in its talons. Inscriptions - “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “HALF DOLLAR,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Designed by Frank Gasparro.
John F Kennedy, one of the most popular presidents of America was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963 when he was on a political visit there. Soon after his assassination, the US Mint got busy with works of minting a coin to commemorate the slain president. Two mint engravers; Gilroy Roberts, the chief engraver and his assistant Frank Gasparro were involved in designing the coin with each person designing the obverse and reverse respectively.
The coin was released after a Congressional Act was passed on December 30, 1963 and the first set of coins were minted on January 30, 1964 at the Denver Mint. The coins minted in 1964 all have 90% silver and 10% copper content in them. The coins that were minted from 1965 to 1969 contain only 40% silver and those struck from 1970 do not contain any silver in them.
Only the pre-1965 coins contain 90% silver in them and they are known by the name junk silver, although in reality, they have great monetary value in today’s world. These coins are sold in bulk today mainly for investment purposes. Since they have been in circulation, these Kennedy Half Dollars may have a few numismatic flaws which makes them less appealing for collectors while it has high investment appeal due to its 90% silver content.
