Detailed Information:
The journey of the Franklin Half Dollars were cut short to make way for the Kennedy Half Dollars, released to honor the fallen leader John F. Kennedy. Since the Franklin Half Dollar was just 16 years old then, by law introduction of a new coin needed an act of Congress. The Act of December 30, 1963, led the mint to issuing this new coin.
On November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy was fatally shot when he was on a trip to Dallas, Texas. An hour later, he was pronounced dead. Within a few hours after the announcement, the Mint Director, Eva Adams had called the chief engraver of the Mint, Gilroy Roberts to consider placing Kennedy’s portrait on one of the coins. The coins selected were the quarter dollar, half dollar, and one dollar. This was discussed with Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy, who decided that the portrait will go on the half dollar as she did not want to replace the portrait of George Washington on the quarter dollar.
Due to time restraint, Gilroy Roberts and his assistant Frank Gasparro modified a design that was already used for the Kennedy medal in the Mint’s Presidential series. Gilroy and Gasparro had prepared a design for the obverse and reverse respectively.
The obverse features a handsome and realistic portrait of JFK, making his hairstyle life-like and even capturing the iconic smile of the popular leader. The reverse features a modified version of the Presidential Seal with a majestic bald eagle holding a striped shield with its wings wide spread, a bundle of arrows and an olive branch can be seen in its left and right talons respectively. The eagle is also holding a scroll in its beak with the inscription E Pluribus Unum on it and is encircled 50 stars which represent the 50 US states.
Only the 1964 issues are made of 90% silver and 10% copper. From 1965-1970 editions contain 40% silver in them. After 1970, these coins were made from a combination of copper and nickel. The 90% silver coins were and still remain popular among collectors and investors.
