One of the most famous characters in Greek mythology, Hercules’ adventures have been depicted in various forms of art and literature throughout the centuries. This silver round series commemorates the 12 labors that Hercules had to complete as a part of his penance for slaying his family. For the fourth labor, King Eurystheus challenged Hercules to subdue the Erymanthian Boar- and according to some accounts, bring him back alive to Mycenae. This dangerous beast, who lived in a lair on top of Mount Erymanthus, was known for frequently causing havoc and destruction to men and animals in its path. In order to complete this task, Hercules underwent a long, difficult journey involving a deadly centaur attack which resulted in the loss of a good friend, Pholus. After chasing the exhausted boar around the mountain for a long time, Hercules was eventually able to drive the boar into a snowbank, entrap the large beast in his net, and carry it all the way back to King Eurystheus. It is said that the King was so scared upon seeing the boar that he hid inside a giant bronze jar.
The obverse of the round displays a profile view of Hercules, wearing the skin of the Nemean Lion, the beast he killed for his first labor. Inscriptions on the obverse include the weight and purity of the round.
The fierce Erymanthian Boar, charging forward on a grassy plain, is featured on the reverse of the round. Inscriptions include “ERYMANTHIAN BOAR", as well as "V", the Roman numeral for ‘4’.
