Hercules was the son of the god Zeus and mortal woman Alcmene. He is one of the most recognizable characters in Greek mythology and his adventures have been depicted in art and literature throughout the centuries. This Hercules silver round series pays tribute to the 12 labors that Hercules performed as his sentence for slaying his family, after being driven mad by the goddess Hera. For his terrible crime, he was ordered by the Oracle to serve King Eurytheus and complete his 10 labors. Two more labors were added after because Eurytheus decided two of the original labors were not completed properly. The fifth labor was one of those two tasks. For this labor, Hercules was ordered to meticulously clean King Augeas' stables. This was no easy task, as Augeas owned more cattle than anyone else in all of Greece. He was said to own large herds of horses, cows, sheep, and goats. To make the task more difficult, Hercules was challenged to clean the stables in one day. Hercules offered to clean the King’s stables in return for one-tenth of his cattle, and the King agreed. Hercules dug deep trenches that ran through the stables and turned the nearby rivers to run through the trenches, flushing out the stables quickly. After learning that Hercules was paid for his labor, King Eurytheus decided it wouldn’t count as one of the ten.

The obverse of the round displays a profile view of Hercules, wearing the skin of the Nemean Lion. Inscriptions include the weight and purity of the round.

Depicted on the reverse of the round is the Augean Stables, with water rushing through the trenches Hercules built. Inscriptions on the reverse include "AUGEAN STABLES", as well as the Roman numeral "V" (5).
