Morgan & Peace Silver Dollars
Morgan & Peace Silver Dollars – Rare U.S. Coins
The Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars are two of the most beloved and historically significant silver coins minted by the United States. Each series represents a unique era - the Morgan Dollar with its ties to the American westward expansion and industrial age, and the Peace Dollar, symbolizing hope and renewal after World War I. Together, they offer collectors a journey through America’s evolving identity.
The Morgan Silver Dollar: A Timeless Classic
Minted from 1878 to 1904, and once more in 1921, the Morgan Silver Dollar features the iconic Lady Liberty designed by George T. Morgan. Struck in 90% silver, this large coin is celebrated for its elegant detail, strong strike, and beautiful luster. It’s one of the most widely collected 19th-century coins.
Morgan Dollars were a product of post-Civil War industrial growth and the abundance of silver in the West. The final year of issue, 1921, was also the only year the Morgan Dollar was minted in Denver. Its reissue in that year makes it a vital bridge between the Morgan and Peace series.
Low Mintage & High Value
The Morgan Silver Dollar (1878–1904, 1921) features several key date rarities that are must-haves for serious collectors:
-
1893-S – The undisputed king of Morgan Dollars, with a mintage of only 100,000. One of the most valuable U.S. coins in circulated condition.
-
1889-CC – A rare Carson City issue with high demand and limited surviving examples.
-
1895 Proof Only Issue – No circulation strikes, only 880 proof coins were officially issued.
-
1901 – Common in circulated grades, but exceptionally rare in mint state.
-
1894 – Low total mintage across all mintmarks makes this year highly sought-after.
The Peace Silver Dollar: Symbol of a New Era
The Peace Dollar was minted from 1921 to 1928, and again in 1934 and 1935. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, it was created to honor peace after WWI. The obverse features Lady Liberty modeled after his wife, Teresa de Francisci, wearing a radiant crown.
The reverse shows a bald eagle resting on a rock, clutching an olive branch with the word “PEACE” inscribed below - a bold, modern departure from the classical motifs of earlier coinage.
Scarce Peace Silver Dollar Key Dates
Though minted for a shorter period (1921–1928, 1934–1935), the Peace Dollar series also includes standout key dates:
-
1921 High Relief – First year of issue with a unique high-relief design; highly collectible and beautiful.
-
1928 (Philadelphia Mint) – The lowest mintage in the series at just 360,649 coins.
-
1934-S – Rare in higher grades; especially hard to find in mint state with strong strike.
-
1935-S – Final year of the series and difficult to find in gem condition.
