MORGAN SILVER DOLLAR

Whether you are a novice or advanced collector, the Morgan Silver Dollar makes an excellent addition to any precious metals portfolio.

HISTORY

The Morgan Dollars were the first standard silver dollar to be struck after the Coinage Act of 1873. They were produced from 1878 until 1904, and then again in 1921. Eventually, they were replaced with the Peace Dollar. Morgan Dollars were minted for over forty years, making them the longest silver dollars in circulation. Representing westward expansion and advanced industrialization, Morgan Dollars are popular among collectors as well as history enthusiasts! In September 2020, the House of Representatives allowed the Morgan Dollars to be minted in addition to the Peace Dollars beginning in 2021.

DESIGN

Mint Chief engraver George T. Morgan designed the Morgan Silver Dollar in 1878. The obverse showcases Lady Liberty, facing left, wearing a cap and a crown surrounded by 13 stars. Inscriptions read: “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, and the year of mintage. The reverse displays an American Eagle with wings outstretched, holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons all pictured within a wreath. Inscriptions read: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, and “ONE DOLLAR”. All mintmarks, except Philadelphia, are featured on the reverse beneath the ribbon bow on the wreath.

VALUE

How much can you expect to pay for a Morgan Silver Dollar? There are a wide range of factors that contribute to a coin’s value. The year of mintage, coin rarity, in addition to the condition are all considered when deciding the price. Morgan Silver Dollars can be found for as little as around $10 and up to $100, some even exceeding that amount. Early Silver Morgan Dollars that are in good condition will be priced the highest due to their scarcity and the demand for well-preserved coins. However, most Morgan Silver Dollars are over 100 years old, making it unusual to find them in pristine, untouched condition. There are several esteemed coin grading companies that inspect the coin’s physical condition and determine a “grade”. Coins with better grades will also be listed at a higher value.
