The Chinese Panda coin program started with the release of the Gold Panda coin in 1982. The first Silver Pandas were produced the following year in 1983, but only in Proof condition. Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Panda coins were not issued until 1989. Until 2016, Panda coins were manufactured in a weight of 1 troy ounce. However, that year Gold and Silver Panda coins started being produced in denominations of 30 grams instead. Additionally, the 5 troy ounce Panda Coins were reduced to 150 grams. In that same year, Giant Pandas were notably recategorized from “endangered “ to “vulnerable” by the IUCN, much to the relief of Panda-lovers worldwide. Many versions of these Chinese Silver Panda coins have been issued, including uncirculated and proof variations. They have also been issued with colored surfaces and special privy marks. 

The obverse features the Temple of Heaven, a complex composed of several religious buildings located in Beijing, China. Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties visited the Hall of Prayer each year to pray for a good harvest. 

The reverse design of the Silver Panda changes every year (excluding 2001 and 2002 when the design remained the same). For 2022, the design showcases two panda cubs playing together in the snow. The special 40th anniversary privy mark is shown on the bottom left of the coin.
