The Silver American Eagle coin program is the official silver bullion program of the United States. For the 35th anniversary of the series, the US Mint has announced a redesign of the reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles. This redesign puts in place brand new security features within the design, including an anti-counterfeit reeded edge that appears like a "gap" variation on the coin. The new reverse for both the Gold and Silver Eagles showcases two new depictions for the American Bald Eagle. For the Silver Eagle, you will see an American Eagle in mid-flight. Additionally, the obverse was modified to more closely resemble the original Walking Liberty design.

The obverse displays the historic Adolph A Weinman “Walking Liberty” design. This illustration was on the silver half-dollar from 1916-1947. Restored elements from this original design include Weinman's initials, the year of mintage font, as well as minor details for Liberty's eye, bonnet, flag, and the solar rays. Lady Liberty strides towards the sunset with oak and laurel branches in her left arm, stretching out her right arm to the horizon. She also has the American flag draped over her shoulders.

The new reverse design shows a bald eagle flying while carrying an oak branch, perhaps back to its nest or to create a new nest. The eagle is surrounded by inscriptions including the country, weight, purity, denomination, and the US motto “E Pluribus Unum”.
