The obverse bears the “Walking Liberty” illustration originally used on the 1916-1947 silver half-dollar. Elements that have returned to the coin are Weinman's initials, the year of mintage font, as well as minor details for Liberty's eye, bonnet, flag, and the solar rays. Lady Liberty walks towards the setting sun while carrying oak and laurel branches. The American flag is draped over her shoulders and her dress billows gently in the wind.

The new reverse design of the American Silver Eagles showcases the American bald eagle in flight with an oak branch in its talons. Inscriptions that surround the eagle note the country, weight, purity, denomination, and US motto “E Pluribus Unum”.
