Because these coins have the new reverse, they begin the Type 2 Silver Eagle coins. These 2021 Type 2 Silver Eagles were struck from 1 troy oz of .999 fine silver, and they were also all graded MS 69 First Strike by PCGS. The American Eagle coins began in 1986, and it was so named for their famous reverse design. However, the name still befits this lovely American Type 2 Silver Eagle coins because the reverse continues to spotlight the bald eagle. For the 35th anniversary, the US Mint created a new reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles. This major change arose because, according to law, the Treasury can only change the design of a coin once within a certain timespan. Therefore, the US Mint meticulously created this new reverse and added in new security features such as the anti-counterfeit reeded edge. This new edge looks like a "gap" in the reeded design. Additionally, the Mint further updated the obverse to look more like the original Adolph A. Weinman design used on the 1916-1946 silver half dollar. However, the platinum and palladium American Eagle will not be changed at this time.
The obverse maintains the Adolph A Weinman “Walking Liberty” design with restored elements including Weinman's initials, the year of mintage font, as well as minor details for Liberty's eye, bonnet, flag, and the solar rays. In the picture, Lady Liberty heads toward the setting sun. She carries oak and laurel branches in her left arm and outstretches her right arm to the rising sun. The American flag is draped over her shoulders.
The new reverse design of the Type 2 Silver Eagle coin bears a flying American bald eagle with an oak branch secure in its talons. Inscriptions border the eagle including the country, weight, purity, denomination, and the US motto “E Pluribus Unum”.
