Silver Eagle Design Elements
The design of American Silver Eagles is one of the key factors contributing to their popularity. The obverse side of the coin features the iconic "Walking Liberty" design, originally created by Adolph A. Weinman for the half-dollar coins minted between 1916 and 1947. This timeless image depicts Lady Liberty in full stride, her right hand extended and her left hand holding laurel and oak branches, symbols of civil and military honor. She is draped in the folds of the American flag, with the sun rising behind her, symbolizing hope and renewal. The obverse also bears the inscriptions "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and the coin's year of mintage.
The original reverse of the Silver Eagle coins featured a heraldic eagle design by John Mercanti, the former Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. The imagery depicts an eagle with its wings spread wide, holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Above the eagle's head are 13 stars, representing the original 13 colonies, and surrounding the design are the inscriptions "United States of America," the coin's weight and purity, and its denomination. The reverse design also includes the mintmark, which is present on proof and burnished editions.
In 2021, the U.S. Mint introduced the Type 2 design for the reverse of the Silver Eagles, marking a significant update to this cherished coin series. The new reverse, designed by U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Emily Damstra, showcases a bald eagle in mid-flight, clutching an oak branch in its talons. This dynamic and realistic portrayal of the eagle reflects the strength and resilience of the nation. The Type 2 design also incorporates enhanced security features, including a reeded edge variation, to help prevent counterfeiting and ensure the integrity of the coin.
