The Perth Mint coins are struck in gold, silver, and platinum group metals. Some of their popular platinum offerings include the Platinum Kangaroo coins since 2018, Platinum Lunar coins since 2020, and the Platinum Koala coins. Sizes of Perth Mint platinum coins have varied from 1/20 troy oz up to 1 troy oz through the years. Additional Australian platinum coins from the Perth Mint include the Perth Mint platinum Platypus coins!

Australia’s animal kingdom is well-known for its uniqueness with kangaroos, koalas, and even aquatic life. Only around Australian shores will you find cuttlefish, weedy sea dragons, and the platypus. The platypus is a semi-aquatic mammal endemic to Australia. This creature is one of the few mammals that can lay eggs instead of carrying their young internally through a gestation period. It can sense prey through electrolocation, and this adorable creature is actually venomous, so stay away from its spurs! Out of all the platinum Australian coins available, the Perth Mint Platinum Platypus is one of the most famous and distinctive programs.

These Perth Mint platinum coins first debuted in 2011, and ended in 2018, as a replacement for the Platinum Koala coins. This program had a small annual mintage of only 30,000 each year it is available.

Each year, these Australian platinum coins contained the same beloved image of platypus swimming among the seaweed on the reverse. Surrounding the animal are bubbles and seaweed on the right side of the coin. The border carries the inscriptions indicating the coin’s year, weight, purity, and “AUSTRALIAN PLATYPUS.” Its face value is 100 Australian dollars, which is inscribed on the obverse around the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in matte finish with highlights.
