Sold to compete with the Krugerrand, these started after the US Department of Treasury began to sell some of the national stockpiles of gold. 

1980 GRANT WOOD

Wood was a painter, most famous for his "American Gothic" painting of two farmers and a pitchfork. 

1981 MARK TWAIN

Twain was a famous writer, publisher, lecturer, and humorist. His two most famous books are "The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin" and "The adventures of Tom Sawyer."

1982 LOIUS ARMSTRONG

Armstrong was one of the first African American entertainers to be seen first as an entertainer instead of his skin color. He was an influential figure in jazz with a charismatic voice and personality. Armstrong was most famous for his singing and playing the trumpet. Additionally, the R&B Hall of Fame added him in 2017.

1983 ROBERT FROST

Frost was a famous poet worldwide and won 4 Pulitzer prizes and a Congressional Gold Medal for his work. Most of his poetry centered on rural life and is cherished and taught in classrooms, universities, homes, and more today.

1984 HELEN HAYES

Hayes was arguably one of the most famous theatre actresses of the 20th century. Dubbed the "First Lady of American Theatre," she also gave back generously in time and money towards nonprofit and charitable causes. She earned an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony award, as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her philanthropy. Her most significant cause was Helen Hayes hospital, known as a physical rehab hospital in New York. 

Additionally, celebrate with these coins during October, which is National Arts & Humanities Month. This month is America's largest celebration of the arts.

1988 AMERICA IN SPACE YOUNG ASTRONAUT MEDAL PROGRAM

The explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger left America in disarray. However, the first successful launch after the blast was a celebration, indeed. Hence, the 1988 America in Space silver, bronze, and gold pieces. This gorgeous gold medallion features the US space shuttle on the obverse with the 13 stars of the original colonies. The reverse showcases the majestic eagle with wings spread in flight, above the Young Astronauts program logo, which also has 13 stars. The space shuttle was a design by 12-year-old Brian Kachel. 

2014 JOHN F. KENNEDY 50TH ANNIVERSARY HALF DOLLAR GOLD PROOF COIN

This gorgeous 99.99% pure gold proof coin is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first Kennedy half dollar. The Kennedy half dollar was in honor of the 35th president of the United States, Kennedy. Kennedy died in 1964 by assassination. This is the first and only half dollar to strike in gold. Additionally, this coin has 50 stars which are more stars than any other US coin produced for circulation. This unique coin is a must-have for any investor or collector. The design of Kennedy is the same image from his inaugural medal in 1961 and from the first Kennedy half dollar. The gold coin contains the 50 stars circling a heraldic eagle with a shield on chest and olive branches and 13 arrows in talons.

 1974 NELSON ROCKEFELLER VICE PRESIDENT INAUGURAL MEDAL

This handsome gold medallion is in honor of Nelson Rockefeller, the American politician, and businessman who was the 41st Vice President of America. The powerful Rockefeller family is still known worldwide today. The obverse of this coin features Rockefeller and an inscription of his name, "NELSON ALDRICH ROCKEFELLER." The reverse features the mightly American eagle standing on a rock. Engravings on this side include "VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "INAUGURATED DECEMBER 19, 1984."
