Detailed Information:

As a competition to the South African Krugerrands, the American Arts Commemorative Series medallions were released by the US Mint after the authorization of the Public Law 95-630, on November 10, 1978. The series was a five-year program run from 1980-1984, during which time 10 gold medallions were released; five 1 oz medals and five ½ oz medals which honored ten different celebrated artists.

The medal honoring Louis Armstrong was the third in the series. Louis Daniel Armstrong was born on August 4, 1901 and died on July 6, 1971. His is a literal rags to riches story, being born to a poor family in New Orleans, Louisiana, he grew up in a rough neighborhood. Abandoned by his father in infancy, he had to work from early childhood to contribute to his family. Armstrong had several nicknames and the famous among them are “Pops” and “Satchmo,” short for satchel mouth.

He came to prominence in the music world in the 1920s, and his career spanned for a whopping 5 decades. Some of his prominent works are “Star Dust,” “What a Wonderful World,” and “La Via En Rose.”

By 1932, Armstrong had become so famous that he had started starring in movies. Although he was criticised harshly by the critics, he did not let the criticism affect him and decided to do a long tour throughout Europe in 1933, which made him an even bigger star than anybody ever expected. In the mid-50’s Armstrong’s popularity had soared worldwide, and he came to be known as “Ambassador Satch.” During 1950s and 1960s, he performed all over the world. He thoroughly broke down several barriers for his race and became a hero in true sense.

The medal features a portrait of Louis Armstrong on the obverse and on the reverse it features his trumpet and musical notes. Also inscribed are the apt words “AMBASSADOR OF JAZZ,” as he lived his life for music. This medal will be one of the prized possessions in your collection of coins. This was a limited mintage and only a few survive today.
