The American Gold Eagle

The American Gold Eagle is the most sought-after coin among US gold coins. Being produced since 1986, it’s highly demanded by investors and collectors all over the world. The minting of this remarkable coin was authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act signed by Ronald Reagan in 1985, according to which, all American gold coins should be produced of gold mined specifically in the United States. The American Gold Eagle coins are manufactured by the US Mint and backed by the US Government.

These impressive coins can be found in three editions: Brilliant Uncirculated Gold Eagles, Certified Gold Eagles, and Proof Gold Eagles. Brilliant Uncirculated coins are coins that have no wear and tear marks on them since they are shipped directly from the mint in their sealed plastic tubes to preserve their clean look. These coins have never been in circulation and are stamped with a special mark indicating the facility in which they were produced. The Brilliant Uncirculated coin edition comes in various sizes, from 1/10 oz. up to 1 oz., having face values between $5 and $50. Just like other types of the American Gold Eagles, BU Gold Eagles are produced of 91.67% fine gold and the Gold Eagle Coin prices are usually very close to the gold spot price. Since uncirculated coins are more popular than proof coins, they often are produced in bulk quantities.

The Design of American Gold Eagle

The American Gold Eagle features the design of the Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907, which makes these coins very popular and easily identifiable among collectors and investors. On the obverse side of the coin is depicted the image of Lady Liberty, who firmly walks against the rays of the sun, with flowing hair and carrying an olive branch in the left hand and a torch in her right hand. Her representation is surrounded by the state stars and the ‘Liberty’ inscription. The design belongs to Augustus Saint-Gaudens’, a well-known American Renaissance sculptor, and is referred to as the most beautiful gold coin in the U.S. coinage history. Also, in the background, down-left, is represented the U.S. Capitol building. On the reverse of the American Gold Eagle coin is the image of a flying male eagle, which holds an olive branch in its talons and carries it over the nest with its hatchlings and the female eagle in it. This picture of the American symbol of patriotism highlights the significance of the protection of family values and was created by the contemporary sculptor Miley Busiek. Along with the eagle representation, the reverse side also carries the face value and weight marks, as well as the ‘United States of America’, “E Pluribus Unum’ and ‘In God We Trust’ inscriptions.
