About the Superb Centennial Dollar
In 1967, Canada celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Confederation by issuing a Centennial Silver Dollar. Also known as the "Goose Dollar", this 1 oz coin became Canada's final circulated silver dollar. Designer Alex Colville suggested the use of the Canada Goose for the design, due to its "serene, dynamic quality". In addition, the Canada Goose rooted itself in the Canadian psyche over time with its recognizable migratory patterns signaling the changing seasons. On the 100th Anniversary of Colville's birth, The Royal Canadian Mint celebrates the artist's impact on modern Canadian coinage.
Cue the Canadian Goose Facts
Native to North America, the Canadian Goose occasionally reaches northern Europe. While these geese initially established populations in Great Britain, they spread to other countries throughout Europe. These include but are not limited to Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and France. The black-headed, brown-bodied and white-cheeked birds signal the changing of the seasons whenever they migrate in their recognizable V-Formation. Canada Geese tend to live near bodies of fresh water and keep to a primarily herbivorous diet. Recently, Canadian Geese have started to be considered pests, as they frequently occupy space normally utilized by humans. Notably golf courses, college campuses, parking lots, and parks. They may only be 30-45 inches in length, but do not underestimate their power. When threatened, these birds may participate in some fowl play, so be sure to keep a wide berth!
Two Sides of a Coin
The obverse displays Queen Elizabeth II’s bust, designed by Susanna Blunt.
The reverse of the coin contains the mirror image of Alex Colville’s beloved design in honor of the 100th anniversary of his Colville’s birth. While Colville's original design on the goose faced left, the modern adaptation now faces right. A Micro-engraved maple leave featuring the year of mintage is inscribed on the reverse as well, as an added layer of security.
