The 2018 South Africa 1 oz Gold Krugerrand, minted by the South African mint, is one of the most collected series of coins in the world. Certainly, this mint is the leading coin producer in South Africa and boasts over 100 years of high-quality craftsmanship and experience.

Initially, Krugerrands were first introduced as a way to market South African gold and from there. As a result, a global following quickly grew.

Over Half a Century of Beautiful Releases

The Krugerrand was first minted in 1967. Hence, making this year the coin’s 51st anniversary. Furthermore, this coin is a commemoration of the first president of South Africa. Paul Kruger, known for his military expertise and his role in the forging of the South African Republic.

The full name of the coin is a combination of Kruger’s name. As well, as the name for the South African currency, the Rand. Certainly, an exciting and unique element to the Krugerrand is its followers have added an anonymous charity element to the series.

Every year, during Christmas season, Krugerrands are secretly deposited into the Salvation Army collection baskets.

These deposits are from anonymous collectors around major cities of America.

These benefactors donate these valuable, beautiful coins into baskets. Tulsa, Atlanta, Kokomo, and Seattle, among other cities, are some of the cities this event happens in for each holiday season without fail.

A Landmark Series

Each year, the Krugerrand showcases a left-facing profile portrait of former, four-term South African president, Paul Kruger on the obverse and the Springbok on the reverse.

The Krugerrand coin was originally minted in only a one-ounce size. However, in 1980, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz were offered. Above all, is the fact that it is made up of 91.67% gold alloy and 8.33% copper alloy.

Therefore, this composition gives the Krugerrand long-term durability along with an appealingly brighter hue than coins mixed with silver alloy.

The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Paul Kruger designed by Otto Schultz. Along with inscriptions reading South Africa. The inscriptions are written in the official languages of the country, both English and Afrikaans.

Also, the reverse shows the graceful, striking Springbok antelope, globally recognized as a wildlife symbol of South Africa.

Designed by Coert Steynberg, inscribed with the coin’s name, weight, and year of mintage.
