The South Africa Gold Krugerrand coins were issued to help promote and market the South African gold and by 1980, the Krugerrands accounted for 90% of the international gold coin market. 

The coin’s design inspired by history is highly sought-after and well-recognized all over the world. The coin’s name Krugerrand is a combination of two words Kruger and Rand. Kruger stands for Paul Kruger, the former South-African president. Rand stands for the South African unit of currency. The coin’s obverse features a profile portrait of Paul Kruger, created by Otto Schultz, and the reverse features the Springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa, designed by Coert Steynberg. These coins do not have a denomination, but their value is determined by its gold content, timeless design, and a premium which is dictated by the market. Originally these coins were available only in 1 oz size, then the fraction sizes of ½ oz, ¼ oz, and /10 oz were introduced for investors.
