Celebrate South African minting history with the 2008 South Africa 0.35 oz Proof Gold Krugerrand Oom Paul 3-Coin Set. This distinctive three-coin presentation combines a 1/4 oz Proof Gold Krugerrand, a 1/10 oz Proof Gold Krugerrand, and a special R5 “Oom Paul” bi-metal coin. Together, the two Krugerrands contain 0.35 troy oz of gold and are struck from the traditional 22-karat Krugerrand alloy of 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper. Even more notable is the set’s exceptionally limited production: although 3,000 examples of each Proof Krugerrand were minted, only 250 complete Oom Paul sets were issued.

The set takes its name from Paul Kruger, the historic South African statesman whose portrait has appeared on the Krugerrand since the series debuted in 1967. “Oom Paul,” meaning “Uncle Paul” in Afrikaans, was a familiar nickname associated with Kruger and later became the name given to an important historic coin press connected with South African minting.  The R5 included with this 2008 set commemorates that numismatic heritage, connecting the modern Krugerrand program with an earlier chapter of South African coin production.
