“Big 5” Series Makes a Big Impression

The term “Big 5” refers to the five fearsome African animals famously difficult to hunt on foot. These animals include the elephant, lion, rhinoceros, leopard, and Cape buffalo. In 2019, the South African Mint introduced the first coin of a multi-year silver series featuring the Big 5. Following the popularity of that spectacular series, the SA Mint decided to manufacture a platinum coin series for the first time in its history. Also featuring the Big 5, this platinum series will see the release of a new coin every 6 months. Therefore, this bullion coin series will end in 2022.

About the African Elephant

Two elephant species comprise the genus known as the African Elephant. Both of these species, the African Brush Elephant and the African Forest Elephant, live in groups and stick to an herbivorous diet. Known to be incredibly intelligent, elephants use special vocalizations to communicate beyond the human hearing range. The African bush elephant holds the title as the largest terrestrial animal, growing up to 13 to 14 feet tall. Furthermore, they can typically weigh up to 15,000 pounds!

Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and illegal poaching, both elephant species currently find themselves on the “Vulnerable Species” list.

A Strong Symbol on a Captivating Coin

Platinum Elephant 2020

The obverse of this platinum elephant coin features a frontal view of a large imposing African elephant, its eyes, ears, trunk, and tusks rendered in exquisite detail. The South African coat of arms appears below the gentle giant.

The reverse of the coin showcases two halves of an elephant’s face. Specifically, it appears as though two elephants stand next to each other with only half of their faces showing. This design element can be enhanced by placing at least two coins next to each other, which will present an image of multiple elephants standing side-by-side. The weight and purity are inscribed in the center of the reverse.
