Goldback Notes Evolve: Utah, Nevada & New Hampshire Retiring as Oklahoma Debuts

A New Chapter in Gold Currency Innovation

Goldback notes have emerged as one of the most creative and practical applications of real gold in the 21st century. Designed as a local, voluntary currency, these artistic notes are made with precise amounts of 24-karat gold layered in a durable polymer film. They combine the aesthetic appeal of collectible currency with the intrinsic value and utility of gold, making them a standout product for investors, collectors, and those seeking alternatives to fiat currency.

In a major development for 2025, Goldback has officially discontinued its first three state series - Utah, Nevada, and New Hampshire - to pave the way for upgraded reissues. While these legacy notes are no longer being printed, they’re not gone forever. A refreshed version of each series is on the horizon. Meanwhile, the Goldback team is preparing to launch its newest state series: Oklahoma, set to officially debut this August.

What Are Goldbacks and How Are They Used?

Goldbacks are spendable gold notes, denominated in small fractional weights: 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 units - each representing a fixed amount of gold. With the most recent release, Florida, new 1/2, 2, and 100 Goldback denominations were introduced. These innovative sizes will now be incorporated into upcoming refreshed versions of the original three state series.

Goldbacks function as a voluntary local currency in participating regions, with many businesses accepting them for goods and services. They’re also popular for barter, personal gifting, and investment purposes. Each note features elaborate, state-specific artwork celebrating cultural values and heritage.

A Look Back: The History of Goldback State Releases

Since the launch of the Utah Goldback in 2019, the program has steadily expanded, with each new release adding fresh artistry and regional symbolism to the collection:

  • Utah Goldbacks (2019): The inaugural series, reflecting Utah’s legacy of independence and faith.

  • Nevada Goldbacks (2020): Honoring the state’s mining roots and frontier spirit.

  • New Hampshire Goldbacks (2021): Embodying the Granite State’s emphasis on liberty and resilience.

  • Wyoming Goldbacks (2022): Celebrating natural beauty and rugged freedom.

  • South Dakota Goldbacks (2023): Featuring landmarks and historical figures.

  • Florida Goldbacks (2025): Introducing new denominations alongside designs inspired by Florida’s natural and historical richness.

Why the Original Series Were Discontinued

The retirement of the Utah, Nevada, and New Hampshire designs was announced in early June, 2025. These notes are no longer in production but are set to return with modernized features.

The refresh will include:

  • Updated artwork to match current design and production standards.

  • Advanced security features, such as UV-reactive ink, now standard in all 2025+ Goldbacks.

  • Integration of newer denominations like 1/2, 2, and 100 Goldbacks, introduced in the Florida series.

According to the official announcement, the existing artwork of these early series isn’t compatible with the latest technological upgrades. The redesigned series will begin with Utah in 2026, followed by Nevada and New Hampshire.

Oklahoma Goldbacks Officially Launching August 25, 2025

The next addition to the Goldback family is almost here: Oklahoma Goldbacks will officially launch on August 25, 2025. Designed to honor Oklahoma’s rich Native American heritage, pioneer history, and natural beauty, the series promises intricate visuals and full integration of the latest design features.

Collectors can also get an early look at the Oklahoma Goldbacks during the 2025 ANA World’s Fair of Money, held in Oklahoma from August 19–23, where a special preview of the series is planned ahead of the launch.

Goldback Security Upgrades: UV-Reactive Ink & the Penlight Tool

All Goldbacks minted in 2025 and beyond now feature UV-reactive ink - a key anti-counterfeiting measure. These hidden designs can be revealed using the Goldback UV Authenticator Penlight, offering instant verification in a sleek, portable format.

Security and authenticity are top priorities, and these updates ensure Goldbacks continue to meet evolving collector and merchant standards.

Why Collectors Should Act Now

As the original Utah, Nevada, and New Hampshire Goldbacks are now officially out of production, their availability will be limited to remaining stock. Once they sell out, collectors will have to wait until the redesigned versions arrive. The discontinued notes could become more valuable over time due to their historical significance and scarcity.

Goldbacks Enter a New Era

The Goldback project continues to revolutionize how gold is used, shared, and appreciated. From Utah to Florida and soon Oklahoma, each new series adds layers of cultural meaning, visual storytelling, and monetary relevance.

With original designs now discontinued and Oklahoma’s launch on the horizon, 2025 marks a turning point in Goldback history. Bullion Exchanges proudly stocks Goldbacks, including remaining inventory of the out-of-print Utah, Nevada, and New Hampshire series - available while supplies last.
