This year the Perth Mint celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the original release of the Kookaburra Silver Series with a stunning new Gold Kookaburra Coin. Bullion Exchanges now offers the 2020 1/10 oz Australian Gold Kookaburra coin - the newest issue in the fan-favorite series. This is the first-ever gold kookaburra coin produced by the Perth Mint. The Lowdown on the Laughing Kookaburra

The kookaburra is a kingfisher bird of prey recorded in Australia as early as the 18th Century. Since then, Australia adopted this bird as a beloved national symbol. The kookaburra proudly represented Australia during the 2008 Olympics. Additionally, it continues to be the mascot for the Australian Men’s Hockey Team. The call of the Laughing Kookaburra, recognizable for its distinctive sound, often permeates the habitat where it resides. Its famous birdcall, a frequently-used sound effect in cinema and television, sounds like a harsh, cackling laugh- often mistaken for a monkey. This famous call appeared in successful films such as The Wizard of Oz, Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Amusement park attractions with jungle themes also use this distinctive sound to enhance the ambiance.

Golden Design

Until this year, the Perth mint only produced .999 fine silver coins in the Kookaburra Series, making this the first-ever gold Kookaburra coin. Furthermore, this exciting anniversary design pays homage to the original version released in 1990. The Stuart Devlin design features a kookaburra gazing over the horizon while sitting atop a tree stump. Also, beautiful native foliage surrounds the bird. As always, the obverse has the Jody Clark portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the denomination.
