When the Gold American Buffalo Coin was first released in 2006, it was met with great enthusiasm from investors and buyers across the country. This is due to the fact that the Gold Buffalo was the very first pure 24-karat gold coin to be produced by the US Mint for the public. This purity contrasts with that of the USA's official Bullion Coin, the Gold American Eagle, which only contains .9167 fine gold (around 22 karats). The US Mint originally struck the Gold Buffalo coins to compete with foreign 24K gold coins that already proved to be incredibly popular, and have since managed to maintain their status as the favorite investment gold option in the present day. Despite being known as the “Gold American Buffalo”, this coin presents the American Bison, commonly referred to as the American Buffalo in both the US and Canada. This misnomer’s extensive usage led it to become the accepted term for these North American indigenous animals.

The obverse of the Gold American Buffalo coin features a modified rendition of the Buffalo Nickel design by sculptor James Earle Fraser. Buffalo Nickels were 5-cent coins minted from 1913 until 1938. This design of the Native American man’s bust was a combination of three different tribal chiefs that posed for Fraser. The chiefs were from the Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons tribes. In Fraser’s well-known design, the head of a Native American Man faces to the right, showing off his braids and feathered headdress.

The reverse of the coin displays the American Bison grazing on a grassy field. This illustration was reportedly inspired by a 1,550-pound American Buffalo named Black Diamond who resided in the Central Park Zoo during the 1910s.
