The US Mint began issuing Gold American Buffalo coins in 2006, making history as the first 24K gold coins released by the US government. Originally struck to compete with foreign 24K gold coins, investors flocked to the shelves to collect the Gold Buffalo soon after it was released to the public. Despite being called the Gold American Buffalo coin, this coin actually features the American Bison, which is commonly referred to as the "American Buffalo" in both the US and Canada. This common misnomer became the accepted term for these animals indigenous to North America.

The obverse of the coin features the modified version of James Earle Fraser’s famous Buffalo Nickel design. This image showcases a portrait of a Native American man whose likeness was a blend of three different tribal chiefs. In the portrait, the man stares to the right, displaying his feathered headdress and braids.

The reverse of the coin spotlights the American Bison grazing on a grassy field. This illustration was inspired by the 1,550-pound American Buffalo from the Central Park Zoo in the 1910s.
