BU Gold American Buffalo Coins
Gold American Buffalo Coins
The Gold American Buffalo coin is a standout in the U.S. Mint's portfolio, celebrated as the first U.S. coin to feature .9999 pure 24-karat gold. Launched in 2006, this bullion coin was designed to rival internationally renowned coins like the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, appealing to those seeking high-purity gold in their investment collections. Since its debut, the Gold American Buffalo has earned a place among the most popular U.S. gold coins, highly regarded by collectors and investors for its exceptional purity, authenticity, and the trust of the U.S. Mint’s backing.
Each Gold American Buffalo coin’s purity is guaranteed by the U.S. Mint, making it a sought-after collectible and a reliable asset for investment portfolios. These coins are available in both brilliant uncirculated and proof finishes, as well as in certified versions graded by leading services like NGC and PCGS. While the standard 1 oz. size remains the primary option today, fractional sizes—1/10 oz., 1/4 oz., and 1/2 oz.—were briefly offered in a limited release in 2008. Currently, the coin is minted exclusively in the 1 oz. size, a format that remains highly favored by investors. With gold prices continuing to rise, the value of these coins has increased over time, adding to their investment appeal.
The Iconic Design of the Gold American Buffalo
Inspired by the historic Buffalo Nickel, the Gold American Buffalo coin features a design by acclaimed sculptor James Earl Fraser, a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who designed the Gold American Eagle. Fraser’s design embodies the rich natural and cultural heritage of the American West, capturing the spirit of the era.
The obverse of the coin displays a detailed Native American profile, a composite created from the facial features of three Native American chiefs: Big Tree (Seneca), Iron Tail (Lakota), and Two Moons (Cheyenne). Surrounding the profile are the year of mintage, Fraser’s initial “F,” and the word “Liberty,” adding depth and authenticity to this iconic design.
On the reverse, the coin showcases a powerful image of an American Bison, often called a buffalo, symbolizing the vast American frontier. This depiction was inspired by Black Diamond, a 1,550-pound bison that resided at the Central Park Zoo in the 1910s. The reverse side also includes the inscriptions “United States of America,” “In God We Trust,” “E Pluribus Unum,” as well as the weight and purity of the coin, reinforcing its identity as a piece of American heritage.
